SEED DISTRIBUTION 2007 – 2008

1. Members of the British Iris Society should send £4.50 for up to 10 packets and £4.50 for each additional ten packets up to a maximum of 40 packets per member. These are inclusive of postage and packing. All requests for seeds must be accompanied by payment in Sterling Cash, Postal Orders or Money orders (from Commonwealth Countries), US dollars or cheques payable in sterling drawn on a British Bank and made payable to The British Iris Society.

2. A fair division of seeds will be made as soon as possible in January 2008. The distribution will be made shortly thereafter in the order in which the requests were received.

3. No responsibility can be accepted for the results as seed from many different sources is received and it is not always possible to check naming accuracy.

4. Please order by number and retain this Seed List for reference: seed will only be identified by the number on the seed packet. The more substitutes you list the less likely you are to receive seed which you may not want. All seed is obtained from members or through their goodwill and, often, the quantity supplied to the BIS is small. The BIS is grateful for all these contributions.

5. All cheques must be made payable to the British Iris Society and not to the S.D.O. herself.

7. The BIS Guide No 2, 'Raising Irises from Seed'(1997) is available from the Hon. Literature Secretary, (see Year Book for address) price £1.50 inclusive of postage, or £1.00 if included with an order for seeds.

8. Please be sure when sending seed for any future 'Seed List' to enclose an alphabetical list of seed sent with your NAME, ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBER ALL CLEARLY WRITTEN; ALSO REMEMBER THAT THE SEEDS, OR A LIST OF THEM, should arrive by the 15^th of October.

9. Some of the seed in the list is open pollinated - that is by insects which may bring pollen from another plant -so it cannot be guaranteed to come true to name, especially in sections where irises hybridise very readily, such as the Californicae. Where seed has come from a named cultivar, the seedlings will probably not look identical to the parent. Seedlings from a named cultivar will probably differ from the parent(s), but even if they do look alike they must not be called by the parent's name as only divisions of the named plant are entitled to that name.

10. For all species, or reputed species, plants are shown in italics. Cultivars are shown in normal type. Where both parents of the seeds are known they are shown and will usually be followed by 'HP' to show that the pod parent was hand pollinated by the grower. Where an 'x' appears before the cultivar name only the pod parent is known. In general, species forms do not hybridise easily with other species of another series so that except where the donor has several varieties of a species in close proximity the 'x' may be left out. In some species collected forms are so distinctive that they are given cultivar names and appear in normal type.

11. In the lists a 'c.' before a geographic location indicates that the parent plant was collected in the wild; 'dwf' indicates a dwarf form, usually of a species; 'ex' before the name of a place or person shows where the parent plant was obtained from and gives some idea of the reliability of the identification. The abbreviations 'dip' and ‘tet’ stand for diploid and tetraploid usually in connection with cultivars and inter-specific crosses.
