Registering Iris Names

If you have grown an iris from seed, and would like to give it a name, you should first get in touch with one of the iris registrars. Contact details for the BIS registrar, who deals with irises originating in the UK, are given below; some other countries have their own registrars and all of us are associates of the International Cultivar Registration Authority for rhizomatous irises which is the American Iris Society. Final approval for names is given by the AIS Registrar.

You can see from the BIS registration form, which you can download, the information you will need to give about the iris, and some notes about naming and classification. Over 1,000 iris names are registered by the AIS every year so it is important to have accurate descriptions for identification. For the same reason you are asked to provide a photograph. Any format is acceptable but accuracy of colour is most important

Once a name is registered, it cannot officially be used for any other iris, but a great many names have already been used and you should if possible check that your chosen name is available. A list can be found via the AIS website (www.irises.org) or you can ask the local registrar to check.

In the UK the fee for each name is currently £1.50. Please make cheques payable to the British Ms Society and send them with your application form/s and photographs. If, or when, the iris is sold by a nursery, please tell the registrar and if possible send a copy of the catalogue in which it is listed.

Please don't hesitate to contact a registrar if you have any queries. We are all very happy to help in any way we can. The Hon. Registrar for the BIS is: Mrs Jennifer Hewitt, Haygarth, Cleeton St Mary, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire DY140QU. Tel. 01584890526. Email: jennifer.hewittl35@btinternet.com
